Citizen Vigilante
Uwe Boll has spent decades torturing audiences with some of the worst films Hollywood has to offer. Yet somehow, despite all the blunders that have come before, his latest outing, Citizen Vigilante, is undoubtedly the worst of them all. More worryingly, it serves as a dangerous call to arms for those who share the filmmaker’s belief that migrants and immigrants are to blame for the heinous crimes that occur across Europe.
Boll, who writes and directs this abomination, utilises the character Sanders (Armie Hammer) as a sort of “white knight” who takes justice into his own hands by hunting down gangs of immigrants who have got away with some of the most horrific crimes imaginable. According to the film, they have been able to evade punishment because of a “broken European justice system”. Sanders therefore positions himself as a man of the people, hunting and killing everyone he deems responsible, including police officers and judges, in order to “make things right”.
It is clear from the outset that Citizen Vigilante has been made to spread Boll’s hateful and racist rhetoric. Sanders spends a large portion of the film’s relatively short runtime delivering endless exposition dumps about anti-establishment, Islam being a harmful religion, and the idea that migrants are attempting to overtake and eradicate the white European way of life. It is a desperate attempt to exploit the current political climate and inflame racial tensions that Tommy Robinson and Valentina Gomez would be proud of.
This is further evidenced by the refusal to even name a location where these events are unfolding. At first, you might think this is simply another production oversight given how poorly made Citizen Vigilante is, but as time goes on it becomes obvious that Boll has done this deliberately. The implication is that this “could” be any European country at any time and that “citizens should act now” before they are overrun.
Filmmakers have often inserted their own personal beliefs and political views into their work, and rightfully so. When it is done intelligently and coherently, it can raise important questions and spark meaningful conversations that can lead to real change. Boll, however, makes no attempt whatsoever to bring an educated point to the table. Instead, he uses filmmaking as a vehicle for spreading more perilous rhetoric while hiding behind the medium itself.
Perhaps the most egregious thing of all comes as the credits begin to roll, when Boll has the audacity to dedicate the film to the victims of rape and murder in Europe at the hands of these people. Yet many victims and their families have spoken out and asked for their suffering not to be used to further malicious narratives. Boll shows complete disregard for those wishes, exploiting unimaginable pain for his own agenda, which is quite frankly despicable.
What is perhaps most ironic about Citizen Vigilante is that Boll has chosen Armie Hammer as its leading star. Hammer is currently attempting to relaunch his career following numerous allegations of sexual misconduct himself. It is a comeback that will struggle to gain momentum if these are the projects he chooses to align himself with, although perhaps this is simply his level after all. His performance is almost as bad as the material he is given, which is definitely saying something.
Aside from the dreadful narrative and equally poor performances, the film feels and looks like the first project of a high school student who has just discovered editing software and CGI, although that might be an insult to the student. To call the film choppy is probably a compliment. It is almost impossible to make sense of the timeline as the audience is repeatedly thrown from scene to scene with little coherence and no meaningful progression.
Sadly, it is clear that Uwe Boll is an angry, bitter, and dangerous man who sees no problem with using his privileged position as a filmmaker to call for violence against ethnic minorities and stir the pot for a potential race war. Whether it is religion, immigration, or left-leaning political views, Boll’s script makes it clear that you are no ally of his. Citizen Vigilante is not just one of the worst films you are likely to see, it is also one of the most egregiously harmful, and one you would be best advised to avoid like the plague.
